My initial approach to this brief was to study the themes suggested. I then created
dozens of visual sketches for each theme. The sketches were small and quick, which
gave me the freedom to refine my ideas and correct any problems that occurred early
on in the process.
After I had created a good library of ideas, I picked out a number of what I thought
were the most successful concepts. I pushed these concepts even further, testing
different mediums and techniques to find out which worked best for the illustration
and which complimented the desired outcome thus producing a brilliant product. After
many processes of discarding and refining ideas, I selected a single image which I
felt was the best piece to translate into a fully finished illustration which fitted the brief.
I chose to digitally paint my illustration in Photoshop using a Drawing Tablet as I enjoy
using this method of working because it enables me to work with a great amount of
precision.
I wanted the image to be epic, yet fun at the same time. Penguins alone may not be
able to fly but with innovation, anything can be achieved.
