Within my piece my aim was to depict the concept of innovation and originality by looking at nature, inspired by the fact that each living form is unique. Through exploration I focused on the image of a fish, a Koi carp, being a strong and fluid creature. To me the subject is symbolic of movement, and freedom, a physically insignificant being, existing within an aquatic environment, yet with a relentless and natural instinct to survive.
The dominant aspect of my piece is the fact that it is constructed predominately from negative space, a dynamic, stark silhouette of fluid marks, symbolic of water which encases the body of the fish, providing a high tonal contrast between the two aspects, and therefore creating a sense of power within the image.
Overall my aim was to create visual impact and strength within a subject that is often thought of as fragile and delicate.
